Our Mission

Sustainability + Peggy Sue

Guided by our mission, we believe in working towards creating an inclusive, regenerative future, where people are always considered and welcome while we aim to have a positive impact on the environment. We are a small business, but we believe we can make a big difference.

Sustainability to Peggy Sue means acting where we can make the biggest impact today while always looking forward to tomorrow. We’re here to help our customers feel beautiful and loved while keeping people and our planet at the heart of all we do. We, like many other businesses have a long journey ahead, but we believe we can make a positive difference and help redefine clean beauty, together.

PEGGY SUE FOR PEOPLE

Fair & Inclusive Communities

We’re an ethical brand building a community that’s fair and inclusive for all. We want to do our bit to positively impact people; from helping our customers create self-care rituals through to ensuring the welfare of our staff and suppliers, making sure we always give back wherever we can. This is a huge part of Peggy Sue and has been integral to our partnership with Destiny Rescue.

We donate $1 from every sale via our website to help fight sexual exploitation. For us, it was important that we could work with a local charity to create an impact around the world. We believe nobody should ever fall harm to abuse and Destiny Rescue has operations in 7 countries with over 250 staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to fight sexual exploitation and trafficking of children through rescue, reintegration, and prevention. They are a recognized member of The Australian Council for International Development (ACFID), who are the peak body for Australian non-government organizations (NGOs) involved in international development. 81% of every dollar they receive goes directly to their programs, while the rest goes into administrative or fundraising initiatives that allow Destiny Rescue to grow even further and protect more children.

The journey ahead….

As Peggy Sue continues to grow, we’re committed to creating meaningful impacts as we strive toward a better future. For us, this means working toward gaining more transparency across our supply chain to really make sure that every step of the process is as ethical as possible.

Peggy Sue acknowledges the Australian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first inhabitants of the nation and the traditional custodians of the lands where we live, learn and work.

Healthier Communities

We know first hand the many challenges life can throw at us and taking the time for self-care is not always easy. But we hope to inspire and help educate people on the benefits of everyday self-care to create healthier communities. For us, self-care is all about creating moments that can help preserve or improve our wellbeing and reduce stress.

BENEFITS OF SELF-CARE:

1. Can improve emotional and physical health

2. Relaxation response to manage stress

3. Offers time alone

We believe that your skin deserves the absolute best, and natural ingredients provide you with just that. We hope that through incorporating our products as part of your regular self-care ritual, you are able to slow down and get off the treadmill of life, allowing yourself to recenter, restore and be present for not only you, but also those around you.

Over the years we have donated products to the Wollongong Homeless Hub who support homeless families, youth and individuals or those at risk of homelessness. Those products were designed to help support those in our local community that are going through unsettling or hard times to provide a loving moment of self-care and relief.

The Journey Ahead...

Peggy Sue is all about community, we believe healthier, happier people create thriving communities. Our future focus will be developed in 2022, so watch this space for more news. We’re always inspired when we see the impact Peggy Sue has on people, so if you’re open to sharing we’d love to hear your self-care stories to keep up the good word in our community and beyond!

PEGGY SUE FOR PLANET

Packaging & Waste

We believe waste has a lot to answer for when it comes to harming our planet and we’re committed to doing all we can to rid waste from Peggy Sue. That’s why we offer refillable packaging across various products in our Skincare + Body range to make sure we’re using less materials, and you're able to use your packaging for longer. Refillable packaging shreds a huge amount off the carbon footprint of our beauty regime and reduces the overall amount of materials we use. To find out how our refill packaging system works, click here.

We are also a very proud member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organization (APCO). APCO is a co-regulatory, non-for-profit that is leading the development of a circular economy for packaging in Australia. As a member, we are committed to working towards achieving Australia’s 2025 National Packaging Targets. Our Skincare Range and Refill packaging has been evaluated using PREP (Packaging Recyclability Evaluation Portal) to determine its technical recyclability within Australia and New Zealand’s waste management system. There are many things that determine whether packaging is technically recyclable, such as its weight, material, size and colour. We wanted to make sure that we are continuously working towards a cleaner future.

You may have also noticed our fabulous new recycling logos across the Skincare Range, these are the Australasian Recycling Labels (ARL). They are an evidence based system that support our PREP assessment and serve as an easy to understand guide of how you can responsibly manage your packaging after you no longer need to use it...but we know you’ll be keeping hold of our bottles and jars for as long as possible to refill.

To better understand a few hacks on how to further improve the recyclability of our packaging please see FAQs.

PACKAGING

Glass Bottles & Jars

Across the majority of our refill range, we have maintained glass, now with aluminium lids and PET labels. Previously, our bottles were fully coated, but we learnt that this can prevent the glass being detected as glass during sorting for recycling, meaning it was unlikely to be recycled. To this, we also consciously removed pumps and glass droppers, as these are also problematic to recycle.

Aluminium can be infinitely recycled, so we decided to move our lids to improve recyclability and work with our new aluminium bottles. Our PET labels provide the water resistance needed for our self-care regimes and glass is fully recyclable and provides great longevity for refill, so you can keep using your

bottles for as long as possible. Please head to our FAQs to learn of a top tip on how to improve our glass recyclability by removing our labels!

Aluminium Bottles & Lids

For our bath shots and cleansers, we have moved our packaging to use aluminium. Aluminium provides greater durability than glass for products that are more prone to being used in the shower/ bath and prevents breakage. They can be easily cleaned and refilled to maximise their life and if no longer needed, fully recyclable.

Refill Pouch

Our refill pouches are made of flexible plastics now proudly part of the RedCycle scheme. This means, once you’ve topped up your reusable bottle, the pouches can be rinsed and returned to participating stores to be recycled. Using refill pouches is really important in keeping our overall packaging footprint low, they help us to reuse our bottles and jars as much as possible.

Cardboard Tube

Our lip range now comes in beautiful FSc certified cardboard tubes. Our previous tubes were a wood/ polymer combination (so, really difficult to recycle as the materials couldn’t be easily separated). While our cardboard tubes are made from recyclable materials, their size and shape unfortunately do impact

how they are identified in material recovery facilities (where all kerbside recycling goes to be sorted before being recycled). We’ve been testing how we can overcome this, so head to our FAQs page for a tip on how to improve our tube’s recyclability.

Cello Bag

The cello bags used across our Wellness Range are home compostable. Alternatively place in your food or garden organics recycling bin if your local council accepts it.

Secondary Packaging & Gifting

All our secondary packaging (so the boxes some products come in) and our gifting boxes are all made from FSc certified cardboard. This means that they’re sourced from responsible forestry practises. This level of certification means that our suppliers are committed to the safety and preservation of the world’s forest systems, everything living in and around them.

Inks

Our inks are chosen to be as sustainable as possible within print and our suppliers capabilities. For all our cardboard, labels and stickers we use vegetable based inks. These are from renewable resources and are easily recycled. Our aluminium bottles require a more durable enamel ink suitable for application on to metal. We will continue to work with suppliers for the use of water based inks as an alternative solution for these. Currently, our pouches use a petroleum based ink, while this is not the perfect solution we were hoping to find, but we will continue to work with our suppliers to move to a water-based alternative

Packaging Fillers

To protect our self-care goodies in delivery, we now use 3D honeycomb FSc certified and recyclable wrap paper. Each refill bottle or jar needs to be protected so our wrappers are essential to making sure your refills arrive safely. We also include our Peggy Sue paper wrapping to provide an extra layer of protection.

Postal Mailers

Each delivery you receive, be it your first refill bottle, or a refill pouch will come in one of our mailer posters. Currently this is the only cardboard we use that is not FSc certified, but we’re looking to upgrade our mailers later this year to bring them in line with our Peggy Sue packaging.

Beyond our packaging, we recently conducted a Bin Trim Assessment to understand how we can maximise recycling and as a priority minimise waste to landfill from our warehouse. This identified companies we can partner with to ensure our harder to recycle products can be safely recycled or repurposed and it was also oh so informative! The Flagstaff Group offers the collection of film and soft

plastics in order to recycle responsibly. It helped educate our team on best practices in regards to recyclable materials in the workplace so we’re collectively minimising the amount of waste from Peggy Sue ending up in landfill. Did you know you cannot recycle paper towels!? We have also implemented segregated bin systems to capture general waste and recyclables in shared spaces and put our learnings into action every day!

The journey ahead…

We will continue to promote the use of our refill system so it remains our ‘norm’ and continue to find ways to improve the refill process through better product formulations (such as our pourable Facial Cleanser) or packaging features.

Beyond this, we will be looking at how we can source and use recycled content into our glass and refill pouches. This will help us to use materials already in circulation and prevent the need to use ‘new’ material.

RESPONSIBLE INGREDIENTS

It’s what’s inside that counts

All our ingredients are derived from natural sources, with the majority having organic certification to ensure they’re produced as nature intended and free from artificial pesticides or fertilizers. We do this to ensure our products are as close to nature as possible and do their bit to conserve biodiversity, while of course being kind to our skin. All our products are lovingly made here in Australia with the entire range being vegan friendly, excluding our lip care range that contain only beeswax. Peggy Sue is also proudly cruelty free. We firmly stand against animal testing and none of our products or ingredients have been tested on animals, nor will they ever.

The journey ahead…

As we continue to develop our product formulations, we will explore how we can further improve the impact of our ingredients. This means finding values-aligned suppliers more locally here in Australia and looking at ways to expand our vegan range.

CLIMATE ACTION

It’s getting hot in here

We know climate change can feel very daunting and overwhelming but as a business we are committed to playing our part in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Primarily, we’ve focused our climate action on building a refillable skincare business model that’s working towards a circular economy.

It’s estimated that up to 45% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from the production of everyday goods. To make any product requires raw materials to be mined/extracted from nature, processed, manufactured, distributed, used and then disposed of. But we have made sure that our packaging is circular by design to ensure it is used for as long as possible and therefore drastically reducing its carbon footprint.

Beyond our packaging, 85% of our Australian shipments are carbon offset with couriers or Australia Post. This means that when we’re shipping your first refillable bottle or your refill pouches we’re able to offset the impact of those deliveries. We source as many ingredients as close to home as possible to also help minimise transportation and the emissions associated with it.

The journey ahead…

We know the world is still very much run on fossil fuels, which sucks, and for a small business like ours it’s no easy task getting the kind of investment needed or suppliers to help us make some big changes. But it won’t hold us back. We’re looking to extend our carbon offsetting shipments and will continue to try and find suppliers that are shifting to using renewable energy for our manufacturing. Where possible, we will also continue to further localise ingredient sourcing and manufacturing to reduce transportation and therefore keeping our carbon footprint as low as possible. Beyond this, we will invest in understanding where our biggest carbon footprint lies, so that we can make the necessary changes in how we operate and offset while we achieve our longer term goals.
